Reviving the Ball Bearings For the T34 Steering Column
The steering column for the T34 has an area where the steering shaft relies on ball bearings for smooth operation. See below photo.
The chances that the steering ball bearings have ever been greased are very remote. The nylon ring is even known for disintegrating. This is a how-to article for servicing this area.
The first step is to remove the turn signal lever. This is done by removing the giant C clip and plate in the below photo.
When removing the turn signal lever be very careful! Do not disturb the spring and disks that are under the lever. They have a tendency to fly out on a whim! Make a mental note on how they are attached.
In order to pull out the white plastic, which houses the bearing unit, you will have to unsolder the connection from the steering column unit (below photo).
Now that the white plastic housing unit is out punch the bearing unit through with the end of a screw driver (below photo).
Almost there!!! Remove the circular clip around the bearing housing (below photo).
Now disassemble the unit cleaning all the old grease and grime. DO NOT LOSE ANY OF THE BALL BEARINGS! Reassemble with a moderate amount of grease. I recommend Napa's Dielectric Silicone Compound Grease as it is especially made to conduct electricity because metal to metal contact is needed in order for your horn to work. See below photo.
Now reassemble!
Note: The above photo is an NOS replacement unit. It does not have an area to solder for the brown grounding wire. Instead it has a tab for a female terminal connection.
