Taken from Daniel when he posted when he posted it on the type34.info mailing list. Hi all, You may remember that I have complained in the past that the 12V Type 34 wiring diagram that appears on the Registry site and other places is only for early 12V cars. Well, my recent work on the wiring of my car, and my efforts to procure the correct parts, have led me to the following conclusions. The diagram is for a car with no emergency flashers, as far as I can see. It shows a 3-terminal flasher relay, which is presumably 211 953 183A. Assuming the part that I bought (and currently have installed in the car) is correct - the part number is written in pen on the Hella box - this is a very large cylinder. This configuration was apparently available until the end of the 1968 model year. All 1969 cars had emergency flashers, as far as I know, although the parts book is a bit ambiguous about this. Emergency flashers were available in 67 and 68, and there were three different relays. In 67 and half of 68, they used 211 953 227B. This object had 9 terminals, and the switch apprently only had three. This system was ditched half way through the 68 model year, and they went over to 211 953 215A. I don't know what this item looked like. In 1969 they went over to 211 953 215C. This was a largish rectangular box with four terminals. I have one and will be installing it soon. The emergency flasher switch had a large number of terminals which were previously on the relay. As you can see, none of this is in the diagram. There _must_ have been other diagrams at the time. All of this story is borne out by the parts book, and also by the wiring diagrams at www.vintagebus.com. There is a separate wiring diagram for each year. the same parts were used on the Beetle and the Type 14 Karmann Ghia. There is another story for which I don't have the details: at some point (I think it was 69 only) they went over to a brake master cylinder with three brake light switches. This also doesn't appear on the diagram. Daniel.
