Early 32PHN carb linkage _none
 
I got a very early plastic Solex 32PHN carb linkage from Jason Weigel. These were only used up until May 1962 and are practically nonexistent. Thanks Jason! Very, very cool.

NOS early intake manifold _none
 
Before I could get started on trying to clear the carbon from the used '62 intake manifold I got from Everett, Bert van der Jeught offered me an NOS one, the correct version for my car which was only used from March through July of 1962. NOS early manifolds are made of unobtainium, so this is something I never thought I'd find. It looks like the Ghia is suddenly much closer to being back on the road.

A few months after my last post I started an independent blog about early Type 3s and related stuff: http://vwplusvw1500.blogspot.com

In it I've tracked my progress (and sometimes my lack of progress) in getting the Ghia back on the road. I rebuilt the engine and actually had it driving for a short time but there was a piston clearance problem and it had to be torn down again. It's now back together and once I clear the blocked heat riser on my newly acquired intake manifold (thanks Everett) I should be driving again. I'll try to keep my actual restoration progress updated here, as opposed to just rambling on about NOS parts I've bought and whatnot.

I can't believe 2 years have passed since my last post. Sometimes life gets in the way of restoration progress! I've spent the last two years buying parts, including a full set of PoP's reproduction seals. Last week I finally began tearing down my engine. So far things don't look too bad. If I'm lucky everything will be rebuildable.

I installed NOS front brake cylinders and flexible brake lines in 1998 or 99, but the car's been parked since Spring 2000 so I can only hope that things are still o.k. It hasn't moved in 4 years, much to my regret, and until the engine gets rebuilt it won't be going anywhere. Needless to say, very glad to be focused on the Ghia again after a 4 year Variant hiatus! I learned a lot about restoration on that project that I feel I can apply to the Ghia, so it was a worthwhile experience.

I sent my door hinges to John Copello for a rebuild and got them back recently. He did a great job. Now all I need is a free weekend so I can reinstall the doors. I also bought some of his reproduction knobs including a early-style heater knob and visor clips -- all very nice. Thanks John!

I'm just getting started on restoring the '62. It still a long way from disassembly and bodywork. I'm going to start with the mechanicals, hopefully later this summer. Right now I'm just collecting parts.

The car is pretty solid but has a few known rough spots, the worst of which is accident damage to the right side lock pillar and surrounding sheet metal. I knew about this when I bought the car in 1994 so I also bought a right rear fender from Lee, who at the time was parting out a '66. I recently decided to do a more in-depth investigation of the damage and it's pretty bad. The previous owner had it repaired but the repair is rough, especially on the inside. Torn sheet metal, overworked metal, rust, 1/4 in. thick bondo -- it's all there! The sheet metal from the rear wheel well to the door needs to be replaced on the outside, and some of the interior sheet metal too, including the lock pillar. The fender I bought can supply the lock pillar and inner sheet metal, but not the outer skin as it's also damaged and bondoed in the same place (of course!). I can't believe how lucky I am that Paul Colbert had this exact section of NOS sheet metal left over from his restoration and was willing to sell it to me. I now have everything I need for a proper repair. Thanks Paul!

In the past few months I've also found: a cat's eye mirror and early white shift knob (thanks Martin); NOS fog lights (thanks Daniel); a vintage Empi camber compensator; a set of good used Lemmerz trim rings; and red/amber taillight lenses (one NOS, one very good used) and repro clear front signal lenses from Axel Stauber at the Classic. The quest for parts continues...

I'm starting my new restoration journal by moving my old posts from the forums over here. Kinda pathetic to see how little I've gotten done in the last four years!
